Winter storm creates mess for city crews
City street crews started snow removal at 3 a.m. Monday, according to city administrator Jeff Benbrook.
"We had been in contact during the weekend," Benbrook said. "We kept an eye on the weather and decided they would go out if it looked like the snow was going to reach four inches."
By the time many in the community awakened Monday morning, most of the major streets had seen the effects of the effort. The city workers spent all day finishing the task. "They had to pull a piece of equipment out of service for awhile because of a flat tire," said Benbrook. "But it didn't set them back too badly. I think they accomplished a lot considering the number of workers and the amount of snow we had."
School was canceled for the day and many youngsters were out with snow shovels making a few extra dollars.
A large group gathered at the bypass hill by mid-morning with sleds and snow boards. Others built igloos and snow forts in the mounds of snow heaped high by the street crews.
Peabody Market experienced a run on groceries Saturday as the forecast worsened and folks realized they might be forced to stay inside for several days. Eggs, milk, bread, and Pepsi vanished from the shelves.
A truck arrived Monday to restock many of the items that were sold out, but some products were still in short supply leaving empty spots on the shelves.
Another winter storm is forecast for mid-week and a third is headed this way by the weekend.
