Winners announced for Fourth of July events
Fourth of July parade organizers Tammy Whiteside and Rose Thomason have announced parade entry winners for the 2007 event.
"The rain quit just in time for us to get everyone down the parade route," said Whiteside.
The Peabody Main Street float, "Rockin' in the Fourth," took first place. The float was designed and built by student volunteers Embry Hodges, Michaela Methvin, and Mikayla Winter.
Peabody Red Hat Society placed second, riding in Linda Orcutt's car decorated with old 45rpm records.
Peabody Historical Society came in third. Historical society board members Marilyn Jones and Joshua Marshall tossed cardboard fans to people along the parade route.
Winning youth entries awarded prizes were Talia Fraly, G&B Saddle Club, Kenny Johnson, Trace Jost, Kevin Koslowsky, Hadley Miller, Lois Monarez, Derrick Schmidt, Colton Terronez, Scott Van Curen, and Arrianna Wilson.
"The rain probably cut back on entries," said Whiteside. "But we still had quite a few and the drop in temperature before we started was pretty nice.
"A big thank you goes out to all of our sponsors," she added. "And to our honor guard, the American Legion riders, and everyone who entered."
The car show entries grew slightly over last year, but again the organizers felt the threat of bad weather might have kept some of the car owners at home.
"Many of those people are very particular about their vehicles," said Brian Whiteside who was once again in charge of the show and competition.
The winner of Best of Show was Gilbert Adams with a 1940 Ford.
The first place winner was a 1957 Chevrolet sedan delivery truck owned by Richard and Mona Benton, second place went to Jerry Kretz for his 1959 Chevrolet Biscayne, and third place was awarded to Howard Brooks who was showing a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air.
The youth category was won by Gage Thornton with his 1972 Dodge Charger.
Whiteside said he is planning another show for 2008.
"It grows a little every year and everyone seems to enjoy it," he said.
