Wichita playwright is former Peabody resident

Joyce Markley has written the script for a large-scale musical production "Hippie's Wish," to be presented at 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday and at 3 and 8 p.m. Saturday at De Mattias Hall, Newman University.

Markley collaborated on the musical score with former Wichita composer Joan Balay. Balay's credits include musical numbers written for the Lennon sisters and the Johnny Mann Singers.

According to Markley, "Hippie's Wish" takes place "in the wonderful surfing days of the 1960s." Multigenerational family fun with lots of singing and dancing is a feature of the production as a couple of college boys find a magical potion capable of granting wishes and the situation gets out of hand.

The performance is under the auspices of Signatory Exploratory Theatre and Arts, Inc., a non-profit organization that gives stage time to developing artists.
