Warriors take fourth at Burrton tournament

Peabody-Burns High School boys' basketball team placed fourth among eight teams this past week in the Burrton Invitational Men's Basketball Tournament.

Warrior Isaac Good was named to the all-tournament team.

In round one, the Warriors defeated Derby Home School, 75-41. They lost to Berean Academy in second round play, 59-56, before losing 60-58 to Wichita Trinity in round three.

In round one, PBHS dominated Derby Home School's invasion taking a 16-point lead, 26-10, at the end of the first. Nathan Hittle paced the Warriors with 13 points. Good had four. Brandon Crabtree and Derrick Simmonds each had three. Jason Carroll added a basket and Derek Benson put in a free throw.

PBHS continued its assault on Derby, leading 44-20 at halftime. Warrior reserves saw plenty of action throughout the contest. Benson led the second quarter with five points. Bryan Swenson and Crabtree each put in four. Trevor Hamm and Good added a basket apiece. Ryan Wiebe contributed one point.

The second half was much like the first with Swenson pacing the second half scoring with seven. Carroll and Crabtree put in five each. Benson and Hamm had four each. Duane Unruh put in three. Christian Bengtsson added a basket and Wiebe added a free throw.

Berean Academy

Round two action for PBHS brought a rematch with the Berean Warriors. PBHS suffered its only regular season loss to the team during overtime in December.

PBHS came out strong with plenty of offense. Berean relied on the perimeter game and was cold early. PBHS led at the end of one, 19-14. Good paced the team with 12 points. Bengtsson had four and Simmonds had three.

Peabody-Burns remained true in the second quarter while Berean continued to struggle from outside, scoring only five. Benson had five in the period. Good added four. Bengtsson and Carroll each had three. PBHS entered the half with a 10-point lead, 34-24.

Bengtsson put in two to open second half PBHS scoring. Halftime adjustments made by Berean gave the game a new look. Berean went on a 13-4 point run to close the gap to one, 38-37, with 4:30 left in the third. Berean pulled ahead of PBHS and held a three-point lead at the end of three, 47-44. Bengtsson had four in the quarter with Benson and Carroll each adding a trey.

Cold shooting plagued PBHS in the second half. Berean rebounding pressure proved to be too much for the PBHS squad in the fourth. Peabody-Burns Warriors managed to get within three with eight seconds left on the clock. Berean was able to run out the clock to get the win, 59-56.

Wichita Trinity

During round three, Wichita Trinity Knights jumped out to an early five-point lead. Good sank two treys to put the PBHS squad up 6-5. The Knights pulled ahead again and held the lead at the end of the first quarter, 13-10. Benson added four in the period.

The Warriors took the early lead, 17-13, in the second with two baskets from Wiebe and a three from Benson. The Knights tied the game at 18-all at the four-minute mark before pulling ahead to lead at the half, 26-22. Benson had five in the second. Wiebe added four and Unruh put in three.

The Warriors outscored the Knights in the third, 20-17, paced by Hittle with 17 during the period, including five treys. Good added a two and Unruh added a free throw. The Warriors cut the Knight lead to one, 43-42.

The Warriors pulled even early in the fourth, 44-44, but fell behind for the rest of the period. Hittle made a seventh trey with seconds left in the contest to put the Warriors within one, 59-58. A PBHS foul gave the Knights one more on the scoreboard. Down by two, the Warriors failed a last second shot with 2.8 seconds on the clock to take the loss, 60-58. Hittle had six points. Benson and Good had four each. Crabtree contributed a basket.

A makeup game against Canton was scheduled for Tuesday.
