Warriors succumb to tough Celtics

Peabody-Burns High School Warriors opened the season Friday at Hutch Trinity. The Warriors fell to the Celtics, 39-18.
Trinity struck early in the first quarter and put up six points after blocking a PBHS punt and returning it for a score after just under two minutes of play. The extra point was good and the Celtics led 7-0.
The Warriors came right back to put up a score on the Celtic kick-off. Todd Woodruff gave PBHS the only score in the first with an 85-yard return. The PAT by William Pratt failed and the Celtics had a 7-6 edge with 10:44 left in the quarter.
The remainder of the quarter was tough for the Warriors. Trinity put up two more scores and the PBHS squad was down, 20-6.
The Warrior offense had the ball four times in the second, but had trouble moving the ball downfield. The Celtic offense put up one more touchdown before the half, taking a 26-6 lead into the break.
Warrior defensive stops in the half were made by Derek Benson, Ryan Johnson, Derrick Simmonds, Trevor Hamm, Nathan Bishop, Micah Hilliard, Anthony Jones, Nick Abramowich, Andrew Loucks, Anthony Marple, Mike Gfeller, and Woodruff.
Both defenses played well in the third with neither one yielding a score.
The Celtics had great field position to start the fourth quarter at the Warrior five. They punched the ball into the endzone with less than one minute of play. The PAT was good and the Celtics expanded their lead to 33-6.
The Warrior offense put up the first of two scores in the fourth period at the seven-minute mark. Hilliard scooped up a Celtic fumble and went 23 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was no good, and PBHS trailed 33-12.
The Celtics put up their final touchdown in the contest and the score late in the fourth was 39-12.
The last PBHS score of the game came with less than one minute left. Woodruff connected with Benson to set up a first-and-goal at the Celtic three-yard line. Woodruff carried the ball into the endzone to make the final score, 39-18.
