Warriors struggle in tournament play

Peabody-Burns High School Warriors faced difficulties during the 25th annual Burrton Tournament coming home with a 1-2 record for sixth place.
In opening play, the Warriors were defeated Monday by Central Christian, 66-53. They rebounded Thursday with a 59-48 victory over Pretty Prairie, before losing Saturday to Quivera Heights, 47-45, in a close finish.
In first round action with Central Christian, the Warriors came out with a 6-0 run, but the Cougars cut the lead to three with a trey. The quarter stayed even with the Warriors trailing by one, 11-10, at the buzzer.
Caleb Good led the scoring for the period with four. Adam Carroll, Michael Unruh, and Mario Nava each added two on the scoreboard.
In the second period, Jason Carroll opened the scoring for the PBHS squad with a two. The Warriors, however, played behind most of the quarter, but came alive with three minutes left in the quarter to tie the game.
Michael Unruh sank two free throws to even the game at 25. Caleb Good netted three baskets and four free throws to lead the Warriors with 10 in the second period. The Warrior offense generated 21 points in the quarter. Tyler Litton put back a rebound at the buzzer to give the Warriors the four-point edge at the half, 31-27.
The Warriors widened the margin to seven before the Cougars came back to within a basket at the end of the third. The Warriors hung onto the lead at the end of the quarter, 43-41.
From the first whistle in the fourth, the Cougar offense took control. The Warriors battled the Cougar's outside game and their own foul trouble to finish out the stretch. Central Christian defeated the Warriors, 66-53, in the first round of play.
Facing the Pretty Prairie Bulldogs Thursday in the second round of play, the Warriors took an early lead but the offense went cold from the field late in the quarter.
Scoring was even for the Warriors with Caleb Good at five, while Isaac Good, Mario Nava, and Jason Carroll each had two to round out the score. The Warriors were behind by three at the end of the first, 14-11.
The Warrior offense was better in the second, but the defense had trouble with the Bulldogs. Caleb Good hit a three to start the quarter for the Warriors. Down by six, the PBHS squad played back to even at the one-minute mark, but went behind by one at the half, 28-27. Caleb Good had 12 in the quarter and Adam Carroll put in four.
The Warrior defense came out strong in the third to hold the Bulldogs to seven points. Meanwhile, the Warrior offense put up 16 to take the lead, 43-35, at the end of the period. Isaac Good had eight to pace the PBHS squad.
The Warrior defense let down slightly, but the offense continued at an even pace to put up 16 in the fourth.
Five Warriors put up points in the period. Caleb Good paced the Warriors with 29 points in the contest. The Warriors took a second round win over Pretty Prairie, 59-48.
In the third round of play Saturday, the Warriors took on Quivera Heights in the consolation game.
The Warriors were a little cold from the field early, only putting nine on the board in the quarter. Jason Carroll had three, with Caleb Good, Adam Carroll, and Michael Unruh each adding two. The PBHS squad was down by one, 10-9, at the end of the first.
The Warriors equaled the first quarter point production in the second, but the defense struggled to stop the Thunderbirds. The Warriors were down by 10, but came back to within six at the end of the half, 24-18.
Another tough quarter put the Warriors down by nine in the third. The PBHS offense added 14 in the period, but the Thunderbirds answered with 17, 41-32.
The defense ignited in the fourth and the Warriors made a big run at the Thunderbirds. Free throws were key to the PBHS defense with Jason Carroll hitting three, Unruh putting in two, and Mario Nava adding one.
At the one-minute mark, the score was tied at 45. However, the Thunderbirds were successful in a last-second attempt and took the victory over the Warriors, 47-45.
The Warriors placed sixth overall in the eight-team tournament.
The Peabody-Burns Warriors now have a week off to prepare for their next game Tuesday against Goessel.
