Warriors stomp Inman Teutons

Peabody-Burns High School Warriors improved to 2-0 on the season with a win at Inman. The Warriors defeated the Teutons, 40-12.

The first period of play for the Warriors was high-scoring. Warrior offense had four key drives, putting 26 points on the board.

The contest began with the Teutons on offense. PBHS defense held them and forced a punt. Warrior special teams came up big to block the punt and put the Warriors to work on offense at the Teuton five-yard line. Mario Nava gained three on first down. Todd Woodruff ran a quarterback keeper for the score from two. The PAT was unsuccessful. Warriors took a 6-0 lead at the 10:06 mark in the first quarter.

The next Inman drive ended in another blocked punt by Nathan Bishop. Kurt Phillips returned the ball 20 yards to the end zone and the Warriors took a 12-0 lead. The two-point conversion was no good.

Another scoring opportunity was set up by an Inman fumble recovered by Trevor Hamm. With first- and-10 from the Teuton 21, Nava took to the left side for the touchdown. The two-point conversion was successful with a pitch from Woodruff to Phillips, giving a score of 20-0 at 3:37 in the first quarter.

The Teutons once again were backed up in their own territory with good play by the special team. Bishop, Micah Hilliard, and Jonathan Foth made defensive stops to force an Inman punt. Nava fielded the punt and set up the next Warrior score from the Teuton 20. On first down Nava came close to the goal line, gaining 19 yards. On first and goal at the one, Phillips bounced to the right to go in for the score. Nava ran the conversion and the PBHS squad took a 28-0 lead with 41 seconds left in the first period.

Defensively in the first quarter, Brandon Crabtree, James Morris, Isaiah Eldridge, Brian Baker, Woodruff, Phillips, Nava, and Ryan Gaines were credited with tackles.

Warrior offense slowed in the second quarter. Highlights included two pass interceptions, one by Hilliard and one by Foth. Special teams also made big plays to hold the Inman squad. The Teutons did manage a long pass late in the quarter to set up an Inman score from the Warrior five. The conversion pass play was broken by Hilliard and the Warriors led 28-6 at the half.

Warrior offense took to the field first in the second half. The first possession ended in a Baker punt.

Hilliard put the Warrior offense back on the field with his second interception of the contest. The PBHS squad chewed up five minutes, working the ground game with Nava and Woodruff moving the ball. The third quarter passed without a change in the score, 28-6.

The next Warrior scoring drive started at the Warrior 48. A Woodruff pass to Hilliard and an Inman unsportsmanlike conduct call set up the PBHS offense at the Teuton 12-yard line. Woodruff connected again with Hilliard, this time in the end zone for the touchdown. The PAT was no good, and the lead was 34-6 with 7:35 left in the game.

The Teuton offense put up another score on the next drive downfield, making the score 34-12 with 6:22 left in the fourth.

One series later, Hilliard intercepted a third pass to put the Warrior offense back on the field. Nava wasted no time and charged around the left side for the end zone on first-and-10 at the 50. The Nava score put the Warriors lead up 40-12 with 2:15 left in the contest. Hilliard intercepted one more pass late in the game to give him four. The score remained unchanged and the Warriors defeated Inman, 40-12.

"The team played well in the first, but went flat in the second," stated coach Chris Young. "Even though our offense put up a lot of points in the first, Inman didn't give up. This was a physical contest between two physical teams. Now it's back to work. We have to prepare for our homecoming game next week with Sedgwick."

Nava led Warrior rushing with 21 carries for 153 yards and two touchdowns. Phillips carried 11 for 31 and Woodruff was nine for 30 yards rushing and four out of 11 for 57 yards passing.

Hilliard was three for 35 receiving and chalked up four interceptions in the game. Hamm had one reception for 22 yards.

Baker was three for 118 on punts and six kick-offs for 288 yards.

Defensive sacks went to Crabtree and Morris.

Nava and Bishop led the team with eight tackles each. Eldridge had six. Other tackles include Crabtree, Morris, Foth, Gaines, and Phillips, five each; Woodruff, four; Hamm and Hilliard, three; and Baker, two.

Up next for the team is a homecoming match-up Friday with Sedgwick.
