Warriors split two games

Peabody-Burns High School boys' basketball team played twice on its home court this past week, winning one and dropping the other.
The Warriors defeated Canton-Galva Jan. 31, but lost Friday to Inman. The team travels this week to Hutch Trinity and Ell-Saline.
The pace of the Canton-Galva game was fast and rough. The Warriors led by three at the end of the first period, 11-8. Derrick Simmonds paced the team with six points. Derek Benson added three points and Nathan Bishop put in a basket.
Five Warriors got on the scoreboard in the second period. Duane Unruh led the team with 10 points. Bishop had five, Todd Woodruff, Benson, and Simmonds each added two, as PBHS led 32-20 at halftime.
The contest became more physical in the second half with one PBHS intentional foul, one technical foul, and one player ejection. At the end of the third, the Warriors led by 11, 46-35. Benson had six points, Micah Hilliard four, and Simmonds had two points.
The Eagles held the Warriors scoreless early in the fourth and closed the gap to one point with five minutes left in the game, 46-45.
Canton-Galva briefly took the lead at the four-minute mark, but the Warriors' first basket of the fourth quarter enabled them to reclaim the lead with three minutes to play in the game.
The Warrior defense held the Eagles at 47 for the remainder of the game, and claimed the 53-47 victory.
Simmonds had five points, and Unruh added two points.

Inman
The Warriors were cold from the field Friday against Inman. Simmonds had four points in the first quarter and Bishop added a basket, as PBHS trailed 10-6 at the end of the first quarter.
The Warrior defense held Inman to 11 in the second quarter. PBHS scored 14 points and cut the Inman lead to 21-20 with one minute left until halftime.
Also scoring in the second were Simmonds with five points, and Robert Rossberg, Jason Carroll, and Benson a basket each.
Both teams' defensive pressure increased in the third quarter to keep the scoring low. The Warriors took the lead on a basket from Woodruff with three minutes left in the period. Simmonds and Unruh each had a basket, Hilliard added a free throw, and the Warriors led 27-24 heading into the final quarter.
Inman regained the lead with less than five minutes to play in the game. The Teutons lead for the remainder of the game, and finished off PBHS, 43-32.
All of the PBHS offense came from Benson with five points in the fourth.
