Warriors season ends with sub-state loss

Second seed Peabody-Burns High School boys' basketball team fell Feb. 28 to seventh seed Sterling, 69-61, to end the season 12-9.
The Warriors offense managed only six points in the first quarter. Nathan Bishop scored four and Derrick Simmonds added a basket. The Black Bears put up 14 and led by eight at the end of one.
The Warriors were down by 11 at the six-minute mark of the second period. Their perimeter offense found its range and came to tie the game at 24 with just more than a minute until halftime. The Warriors clung to a one-point lead at the break, 30-29.
The offense was led by Simmonds with 11 points and Bishop with six. Todd Woodruff added a three-pointer, Derek Benson nailed two free throws, and Micah Hilliard and Duane Unruh each had one point.
The Black Bear perimeter offense came on strong in the third and tied the game at 39 with two minutes left. Sterling then built a lead and led 47-41 at the end of the quarter. Bishop paced the offense with seven, while Benson and Woodruff each added a basket.
The Warriors continued to play from behind in the fourth. They closed the gap to three, 60-57, with two minutes left in the game. Sterling's free throws down the stretch iced the game.
Benson had 12 in the quarter, Simmonds five, Jason Carroll two, and Bishop one.
