Peabody-Burns Warriors put another victory in the win column Friday. Playing on their home field, the PBHS defense shut out the Hutch Trinity Celtics, 7-0.
The Warriors are now 6-1 on the season and play at home next against Moundridge. Moundridge comes into the contest 5-2 and is the first opponent of Warrior district play. Warrior seniors will be honored at the game.
A strange call on the Celtic kick-off led to a re-kick of the football. Matt Kangas fielded the ball for the Warriors to start their first possession at their own 38-yard line.
Chris Hamm and Nolan Hurst combined to cover the field for the Warriors. They scored just a little over four minutes into the contest on a second and two. Hurst burst through the middle of the Celtic defensive line to give the Warriors the lead.
The PAT by Chris Hamm was good and the scoring was finished for the night.
The Warriors got the ball right back on a Celtic error and the PBHS team tried some air game along with the ground attack. They turned the ball over on a fourth and six pass play attempt.
Defensive plays by Philip Unruh, Justin Mayfield, Matt Kangas, Nick Conquest, and Adam Jones forced a Celtic punt. The Warriors took possession and held onto the ball until the end of the quarter.
The Warriors didn't convert on a fourth and seven and turned the ball over on downs early in the second quarter.
Warrior defense went to work again. The Celtics were penalized twice and pushed back even farther into their own territory. The Celtics punted a good one that gave the Warriors the football at their own 21-yard line. This drive and one more before the half both ended in punts by Conquest.
The Celtics tried a field goal before the half that fell short and the Warriors took their 7-0 lead to the locker room.
Defensive highlights of the second half kept the Celtics at bay. A huge defensive stand came in the middle of the fourth quarter with Jones, Brandon Crabtree, and Unruh making important stops on defense.
The Warriors came close to one more score with just seconds left in the game. The PBHS team had the ball on the Celtic two-yard line, but chose to let the clock run out. Final score of the game was 7-0 in favor of the home team.
Hamm carried for 121 yards on 22 carries. Hurst carried 24 times for 85 yards and one touchdown.
Sacks were recorded by Crabtree, Mayfield, and Unruh.
Adam Carroll recovered a fumble for the Warriors.
Tackles were recorded by Kangas and Unruh (six each), Jones (five), Carroll, Conquest, and Mario Nava (four each), Crabtree (three), Ryan Gaines and Kurt Phillips (two each), and Hurst, Mayfield, Hamm, Michael Cullinane, and Caleb Good (one each).
