PBHS Warriors recorded a road loss Friday at Hutchinson Trinity. They were defeated by the Celtics, 24-14. The second loss in two weeks gives the Warriors a 4-2 record going into district play this week at home against Chase County.
Warrior defense held the Celtics on the first series of the competition. Stops were made by Eric Dutton, Todd Woodruff, Derrick Simmonds, Nathan Bishop, Jason Unruh, and Ben Eldridge. A fourth down PBHS defensive stand set up Warrior offense at the Celtic 41.
Two plays later, a PBHS pass was intercepted. Hutch Trinity ran the ball 93 yards on first down, for the score. The PAT was unsuccessful, and the Warriors were down 6-0 with 8:36 on the clock in the first.
The next Warrior offensive series started at their own 35, due to a Celtic out-of-bounds kick-off. The drive moved the ball to the Trinity 38 but was halted by a Celtic interception of a Warrior halfback pass.
Trinity took advantage of the turnover and moved the ball through the air and on the ground. The Celtics settled for a field goal early in the second quarter on a fourth-and-goal at the Warrior 6. The Trinity lead was 9-0.
The next score of the game was set up by a Warrior pass intercepted by a Celtic. Hutch Trinity worked the short 11 yards to the end zone in two downs. The PAT was blocked by Adam Benson, but the Celtic lead was 15-0 with 2:19 left in the half.
A fourth interception of a Warrior pass stopped the Warriors last chance to score before the half.
After halftime, Trinity offense connected on a pass play early in the third quarter to add six more. The conversion failed and the lead was 21-0.
Warrior defense forced a punt on the next Celtic offensive series to set up the first PBHS score of the contest. Trevor Hamm and Woodruff ran the ball. A penalty backed up the offense on second down. On third and 19, Benson caught a pass to set up a fourth and 11 at the Trinity 28. Bishop stretched out to grab a Simmonds' pass in the end zone for the touchdown. Will Pratt added the extra point and the Warriors were on the board with 1:03 left in the third quarter.
A Woodruff interception of a Celtic pass at the Trinity 26 gave Warrior offense their next chance to add to the score. Three Woodruff runs set up first and 10 at the Trinity 15. Woodruff went through the middle of the Celtic defense for the touchdown. Pratt added one and the Warriors were down by seven, 21-14 with 8:13 left in the contest.
Trinity mounted a slow and deliberate drive which took six minutes off the clock and ended in a Celtic score. They added an extra point and the score was 28-14 with less than two minutes left.
Warrior offense made it into Trinity territory, but the drive was halted on a fourth-and-eight pass incompletion. Trinity ran out the clock to end the contest.
Simmonds connected on three passes for 47 yards and a touchdown. Bishop caught two passes for 39 yards and a touchdown. Benson caught one pass for eight yards.
Woodruff led the rushing attack with 23 carries for 130 yards and one touchdown. Hamm had 11 carries for 31 years. Bishop had three for eight yards.
