Warriors open season with road win

Peabody-Burns High School boys' basketball squad opened its season with a 55-42 road win against Little River.

Isaac Good and Derek Benson put up two each and Benson tacked on a free throw to give the Warriors the early lead, 5-0.

The Warriors led 12-9 at the end of one. Benson led first quarter scoring with eight. Aaron Burnett and Good had two each.

Both teams traded baskets throughout the second quarter. The Redskins pulled ahead midway in the period, but the Warriors battled back to take a two-point lead at the half, 24-22. Nathan Hittle led second quarter scoring with four. Benson, Jason Carroll, Chris Bengtsson, and Brandon Crabtree added two each.

The PBHS squad went on a 10-3 run in the third. Defensive pressure held the Redskins to five points. Benson and Derrick Simmonds hit the offensive boards for key rebounds late in the period. The Warriors led by 10 at the end of three, 37-27. Hittle had five, Benson, Good, Carroll, and Simmonds all added a basket each.

The Warriors shot well in the fourth, adding 18 to the total. Simmonds shot five or six from the free throw line. The Warriors defeated the Redskins, 55-42.

The Warriors will be in tournament play this week with Tuesday and Saturday contests at home and a Friday match-up in Norwich.

Benson 14, Hittle 11, Good 11, Simmonds 7, Crabtree 4, Carroll 4, Burnett 3, and Bengtsson 2.

JV action

Peabody-Burns Warriors junior varsity squad defeated the Little River Redskins, 65-36, in the first game of the season.

The Warriors dominated the game with scoring from eight Warriors led by Chris Bengtsson with 18. Derrick Simmonds and Cole Welsh had 10 each. Adam Benson put in seven. Cody Weerts and Ryan Wiebe each had six. Trevor Hamm contributed four and Aaron Burnett added a basket.
