Warriors lose two league contests

Peabody-Burns High School Warriors boys' basketball team lost two games this past week. It was defeated Jan. 3 by Goessel 67-47, and Friday by Moundridge, 68-63. Now 5-3, PBHS played Tuesday against Sedgwick and travels Friday to play Little River.

First quarter play at Goessel began with a basket from Derrick Simmonds. The Warriors offense took an early five-point lead, 7-2. Both teams shot well in the first quarter with the Bluebirds on top, 21-18. Simmonds led PBHS with 11 points. Duane Unruh had three points, while Micah Hilliard and Derek Benson had two points each.

Both defenses picked it up in the second quarter and the offensive production slowed. Hilliard had three points in the quarter. Nathan Bishop, Jason Carroll, and Unruh each had a basket. PBHS trailed by one at the half, 28-27.

The Bluebirds picked up the perimeter assault and built an eight-point lead in the third. Bishop and Unruh had three points each, and Hilliard had two, as PBHS trailed 43-35 heading into the fourth.

GHS took over in the fourth and scored 24 points. The Warriors could only score 12, and were defeated by 20. Simmonds had eight points in the fourth. Cody Weerts added a basket, while Bishop and Unruh each added a free throw.

At Moundridge, the Warriors and Wildcats played basket for basket throughout the first. PBHS led 13-10 at the end of the period. Benson led the team with eight points, and Simmonds had five.

PBHS built a 10-point lead in the second, but Moundridge fought back to cut the lead to four at the half, 26-22. Unruh scored four, Simmonds and Benson had three, and Bishop and Hilliard each had two points.

Both offenses played tough in the third quarter. The score was tied at 43 at the end of three quarters. Bishop paced the scoring with six points, Hilliard and Benson had four each, and Simmonds added three.

The Wildcats took a one-point led with two minutes left to play. Foul trouble for PBHS put Moundridge at the line at the end of the contest. The Wildcats defeated the Warriors by six. Benson had nine points in the fourth, Simmonds recorded five, while Hilliard, Bishop, and Robert Rossberg each had two points.
