Warriors lose in second round of sub-state

A second-round loss at the Bennington sub-state tournament brought the PBHS Warrior season to a close. The team had a first-round win Feb. 26 against Solomon, 67-48, then fell Thursday to the number one seed Bennington, 53-48. PBHS finished the season with a 7-15 record.
Solomon
The Warriors took control in the first round contest against Solomon. All five starters put points on the board to take a nine-point lead at the end of the period, 15-6. Derrick Simmonds paced the squad with seven. Todd Woodruff, Duane Unruh, Nathan Bishop, and Adam Benson each added a basket.
Tough Warrior defense held the Gorillas to eight points in the second quarter. Warrior offense added 16 with Unruh and Simmonds contributing six each. Carsten Scheben and Bishop each added a basket. PBHS led by 17 at the half, 31-14.
The rough, fast-paced game led to a big second half for the Warriors. With the addition of 37 points, the PBHS squad rolled to an easy first round win over Solomon.
Unruh led the final half scoring with 11. Simmonds added eight. Andrew Loucks had six. Woodruff put in five. Jacob Simmonds had four. Bishop added a basket.

Bennington
PBHS controlled the first quarter of play against the number one seed Bennington. Warrior offense put up 14 while the defense held the Bulldogs to four points. D. Simmonds led the pack with six. Unruh had four. Bishop and J. Simmonds each added a basket. The Warriors led by 10 at the end of one period, 14-4.
Warrior offense continued with good point production in the second, but Bennington made a run to cut the Warrior lead to eight at the half, 28-20. Woodruff paced the team with six. J. Simmonds had four. Unruh and Benson put in a basket each.
With an offensive temp change, the gap narrowed in the third. The Bulldogs closed in on the Warriors, cutting the PBHS lead to five, 40-35. D. Simmonds had seven. Unruh added three and J. Simmonds had a basket.
The Bulldogs tied the game early in the fourth at 40-all. With less than five minutes to play in the contest, Bennington took the lead. Several key PBHS turnovers led to Bennington points and the Warriors were defeated in the last minutes. Unruh had six in the final period and D. Simmonds put in a basket.
