Warriors lose homecoming game

Staff writer

Homecoming week at Peabody-Burns High School brought league losses for both the Warriors and the Lady Warriors. The PBHS squads traveled to Ell-Saline on Tuesday and were at home Friday against Sedgwick.

The Warrior match-up with the Cardinals was a slow deliberate game, with the Cardinals taking time off the clock with each possession. The Warriors lead at the end of the first quarter, 15-11, with points from Steven Morgan, Jared Lopez, Caleb Good, Daniel Unruh, and Tommy Phillips.

The Cardinals held the Warriors to four points in the second quarter, a trey from Unruh and a free-throw from Brennan Commerford. A long "Hail Mary" by Ell-Saline from behind the half court line gave the Cardinals a one point edge going into half-time, 20-19.

Ell-Saline stuck to their game plan and continued to shut down the Warrior offense. The Warrior's only third period points came from Morgan and Grant Klingenberg with two each.

A fourth quarter surge by the Warriors just couldn't overcome the play of the previous three quarters. Although scoring 26 points as a team, the Warriors lost the game 49-50. The last three minutes of the game were spent in "foul-and-go," but the Warriors couldn't make it work.

Homecoming loss to Sedgwick

A very physical game with the Sedgwick Cardinals gave the Warriors their fourth loss of the season.

Twos were scored in the first quarter by Tommy Phillips, Daniel Unruh, Caleb Good, and Nick Conquest. A very fast-paced quarter ended almost even, with the Warriors down by one 8-9.

With good substitutions the Warriors played a solid second quarter. A rough game translated into points from the free-throw stripe. The sort game also was working for the Warriors. A three by the Sedgwick team cut the Warrior lead to 26-23.

The third quarter opened with good defensive play and good team offense. The Warriors couldn't seem to shake the Cardinals though, and the third quarter ended with the PBHS team up by one, 47-46.

The Warriors hung on to the lead until about halfway through the fourth quarter when the Cardinals pulled even and passed the Warriors in offensive production. The Warriors couldn't regain the lead and a last second attempt to tie fell short. The Warriors were defeated by the Cardinals 61-59.
