Warriors lose close one

With just seconds on the game clock Friday, the PBHS Warriors suffered their first loss of the season. They were defeated by the Remington Broncos, 22-20. The team, now with a 3-1 record, will travel to Hutchinson for a match-up with Hutch Trinity.
The game got off to a fast start for the PBHS squad with a scoring drive that started with the first possession of the contest. Warrior offense went to work with the ground game from the Warrior 40 with carries by Nathan Bishop, Todd Woodruff, Trevor Hamm, Ben Eldridge, and Derrick Simmonds. With a second and one at the Bronco 11, Simmonds handed off to Woodruff who reached the end zone behind the lead blocking of Eldridge. Pratt added the extra point and the Warriors led 7-0 in the first with 8:02 on the clock.
Warrior defense did the job on the first Bronco offensive series, stopping them with an interception by Woodruff. However, the Warrior drive following the interception was halted by a huge illegal back-in-the-back penalty. The Warriors turned over the ball on fourth-and-six with a Remington sack on the PBHS quarterback.
Remington scored on the next series on a first-and-goal at the Warrior one-yard line. The extra kick was good. The score was all even at 7-7 with 2:46 left in the first quarter.
Both teams had three offensive series before the Broncos were able to put another score on the board. Remington claimed the lead with just 32 second left in the half. A completed pass through the middle took the score to 13-7. The extra point kick was unsuccessful.
Working with just 30 seconds, Warrior offense started with a big block by Pratt to spring Woodruff to the left side to set up first and 10 at the Bronco 47. The call after a PBHS time-out was a Simmonds hand-off to Woodruff for the halfback pass to Adam Benson. The play resulted in a first and goal at the Bronco 10. On first down, Simmonds downed the football. On second down, Woodruff again threw a halfback pass that found Hamm at the goal line for the score with just two ticks left on the clock. The Pratt PAT was unsuccessful and the game was all even at 13-13 at the half.
Warrior defensive stops in the first half were made by Bishop, Pratt, Simmonds, Woodruff, Anthony Jones, Jason Unruh, Abramowich, Benson, Hamm and Brandon Pickens.
Remington offense took the first series in the second half downfield for the score with 9:05 on the clock in the third quarter. The Bronco air attack hurt the PBHS squad with several big completions in the contest. At first and goal at the Warrior one, Remington added only six, missing the extra point. The score was 19-13 in favor of the Broncos.
Penalties hurt the PBHS offense on the next series and they were forced to punt the ball.
Remington offense was set up to score on the next series with a first-and-goal at the Warrior four. An end zone fumble on the play was recovered by Benson. The result of the play was a Warrior touchback at the Bronco 20.
PBHS offense moved the ball with carries by Eldridge, Woodruff, and Bishop. Early in the fourth quarter, Woodruff took off from mid-field to the left side to the Bronco one-yard line. The 49-yard run set up a first and goal at the one. Woodruff again went left, this time for the score. Pratt broke the 19-19 tie with the extra point kick. The Warriors took the lead 20-19, with 11:05 left in the fourth quarter.
Warrior defense was able to keep the Broncos out of the end zone on the next series, but on a fourth-and-twelve at the Warrior 17, Remington added three with a field goal. With less than five minutes left in the contest, PBHS was down by two, 22-20.
The Warriors came up short on the next drive when a fourth-and-eight halfback pass failed to connect. The Warriors turned the ball over on downs.
Warrior defense moved the Broncos back on the next series. An Abramowich tackle, a Pratt tackle, and a Hamm pass breakup set up a fourth-and-15 Bronco punt. The fake punt attempt was broken up with a Bishop tackle and PBHS got the ball back at their own 31.
With two and a half minutes left on the clock, Warrior offense moved the ball with carries by Woodruff and halfback passes to Simmonds and Benson.
On third-and-seven, a completed pass to Bishop set up a first-and-10 at the Bronco 11. With time running out, the Warriors downed the ball. On second down, an attempted pass play failed. With half a minute left on the clock, the Warriors set up for a Pratt field goal attempt on third-and-10. The kick was no good. Remington ran out the clock and won the contest 22-20.
In the passing game, Woodruff was five for seven for 93 yards and one touchdown. Benson caught two for 58 yards. Simmonds caught one for 13. Bishop was one for 12 and Hamm was one for 10 yards and a touchdown.
The rushing attack was led by Woodruff with 31 carries for 223 yards and two touchdowns. Bishop had seven carries for 25 yards Hamm was one for 17 yards.
Bishop led the team with 14 tackles. Pratt had eight. Other totals included: Simmonds 5, Woodruff 5, Benson 5, Abramowich 3, Unruh 4, Jones 4, Hamm 3, Eldridge 3, Pickens 2, Loucks 1.
