Peabody-Burns High School football team took another win Friday in district play defeating Remington in a road game, 20-7.

The first quarter was a defensive battle for both teams. The PBHS defensive unit stopped two Bronco drives. Brandon Crabtree, Ryan Gaines, Brian Baker, Micah Hilliard, Isaiah Eldridge, and Mario Nava made tackles to halt the Bronco progress.

On offense, the Warriors had one sustained drive in the first quarter. Hilliard caught a Todd Woodruff pass for the first Warrior offense in the contest. Nava carried the ball six times with Kurt Phillips adding three carries on the series. The Warriors were stopped at the Bronco seven, short of a score.

Early in the second quarter, the PBHS squad put together their first scoring drive, starting at their own 32-yard line. Nava and Phillips both covered ground to set the Warriors up at first-and-10 on the Bronco 17. Nava took a pitch from Woodruff around the left side of the line for the touchdown. The two-point conversion failed and the Warriors were up 6-0 at 10:06 in the second quarter.

Woodruff, Nathan Bishop, Crabtree, Nava, Phillips, and Gaines made defensive stops on the next series. Eldridge came up with a quarterback sack on third down to force a Bronco punt.

The Warriors gave the ball back immediately on first down with a fumble recovered by the Broncos at the Warrior 39. The Broncos took advantage of the Warrior turnover and the short field to put up a score on second-and-goal from the one-yard line. The extra point was successful and with 6:19 left in the second quarter, the Broncos took a one-point lead 7-6.

Nava fielded the Bronco kickoff at the Warrior eight-yard line to set up the next Warrior scoring drive. Nava earned a new set of downs, moving the ball to the 25. Woodruff moved the sticks with a 10-yard run. Nava gained eight on two carries. On third-and-two at the Warrior 43, Phillips headed around the left side of the offensive line and advanced the ball to the Bronco three-yard line. Nava finished the drive with a three-yard touchdown run. Nava also added the two-point conversion to put the Warriors up 14-7 with a little over four minutes left in the half.

Warrior defense held an attack by the Bronco offense late in the half. The Broncos moved the ball through the air with success to the Warrior five-yard line. The drive ended with Hilliard intercepting a Bronco pass in the end zone.

The Warriors made a final drive in the half with the last push on a Phillips run, but time ran out with the Warriors short of the goal line.

The second half was big for the defense. Hilliard, Nava, Crabtree, Phillips, Gaines, Eldridge, Jonathan Foth, Baker, Morris, Bishop, and Woodruff all came up with plays in the half to shut down the Bronco offense on six possessions. Defensive highlights included the stop of a Bronco fake punt and an interception of a Bronco pass by Ryan Gaines.

Late in the game, the Warriors put together a drive at the eight-minute mark of the fourth quarter to take five minutes off the clock. Woodruff, Nava, and Phillips all gained yardage, but the drive was stopped at the Bronco 24.

The Broncos made one last effort to score in the game. With two minutes left in the contest, a big Bronco completion put the ball at mid-field. With good pressure from the Warrior defense, the pass from the Bronco quarterback was off target and intercepted by Gaines. The turnover set up the final score of the game.

On second-and-17 from the Bronco 36, Woodruff burst through the line and charged for the end zone. The extra point was no good and the Warriors took the lead and the victory, 20-7.

Nava led the Warriors with 26 carries for 156 yards and two touchdowns. Phillips had 16 carries for 140 yards and caught one pass for 37 yards.

Woodruff completed four for five passes for 64 yards. He also carried four times for 52 yards and one touchdown. Hilliard caught three passes for 27 yards.

Hilliard and Gaines each made an interception and Eldridge recorded a sack. Crabtree led the defense with 20 tackles. Hilliard had 13 and Nava and Woodruff each had 10.

Other tackle totals include Gaines nine, Phillips eight, Foth seven, Bishop six, Baker five, Morris five, and Eldridge four.

The Warriors are now 6-2 overall and 2-0 in district play. They continue in district play Thursday at home against Olpe.
