Warriors defeat Moundridge

Peabody-Burns Warriors started off the new year with a Friday night home victory over the Moundridge Wildcats, 74-62. The Warriors traveled Tuesday to Sedgwick and will be at home Friday for a match-up with Little River.
Derrick Simmonds put the Warriors on the scoreboard first with a free throw at the seven-minute mark. Moundridge offense made a run and PBHS went down by four, 9-5. With 20 seconds left in the quarter, an assist from Nathan Bishop to Trevor Hamm for the basket, plus a Hamm free throw made it a one-point game, 9-8. Hamm and Simmonds had three and Duane Unruh had a basket.
Both offenses exploded in the second quarter. Duane Unruh led the Warrior scoring with seven. Jake Middleton had two treys. Simmonds put in four. Hamm and Bishop each added a basket. Moundridge answered with 21 points, including seven from the free-throw line. The Warrior deficit remained one at the half, 30-29.
Warrior offense controlled the Wildcats in the third, led by big inside play from Andrew Loucks. PBHS offense exploded with 24 points. The Warrior lead was six, 53-47, at the end of the quarter. Hamm paced the team with 10. Simmonds added five. Loucks had four. Middleton added his third trey of the contest and Todd Woodruff put in a basket.
Several key steals, good defense, and excellent free-throw shooting highlighted the fourth quarter. The Warriors held on for the victory over Moundridge. Simmonds had eight points, including four free throws. Unruh had six, including four free throws. Hamm had two baskets. Woodruff added two free throws and Bishop contributed a free throw.
