Peabody-Burns High School Warriors took a first round District V victory Friday at Chase County, defeating the Bulldogs 33-13.

The Bulldog offense made the first strike in the game. Set up by an interception, the Bulldogs took the ball 90 yards to the end zone. They added the extra point and with 2:07 on the clock, the Warriors fell behind, 7-0.

The Warrior offense got on the board on the next series with a second-and-five run from the Warrior 40.

Nathan Bishop covered the field, but was tackled from behind at the four-yard line. Bishop fumbled the ball into the end zone and Micah Hilliard recovered to give the PBHS squad its first score in the contest. Max Nett kicked the PAT and the score was even at 7 with 29 seconds left in the first period.

The Bulldog offense scored with 2:40 left in the half. Bishop blocked the kick for the extra point, but the Bulldogs were on top, 13-7.

The Warrior offense answered with another score shortly before halftime.

Starting at the Warrior 38, Todd Woodruff hit Hilliard with a pass for a big gain. A Chase County late-hit put the ball at the Bulldog 14. A big block by Nick Abramowich sprung Trevor Hamm to the right side for the score. Nett kicked the extra point and the Warriors took the lead 14-13 with only 33 seconds left on the clock.

The Warrior defense throughout the first half played tough with tackles from Hamm, Eric Dutton, Hilliard, Bishop, Ben Eldridge, Abramowich, Derek Benson, Ryan Johnson, Woodruff, and Andrew Loucks.

The Warrior team came out fired up in the third quarter and stopped the Bulldogs on the first series with a sack by Abramowich and tackles by Woodruff, Bishop, Eldridge, and Hamm.

A short Bulldog punt put the Warrior offense at the Bulldog 45. Runs by Hamm and Bishop set up a first-and-goal at the nine. Bishop punched through the middle of the Chase County line for the score. The kick was no good but the Warriors increased the lead 20-13, with 8:50 on the clock.

PBHS kicking team put the ball right back in the hands of the offense with a tackle on the kick-off by Abramowich. The receiver fumbled and Hilliard recovered the ball at the Bulldog 18.

On a third-and-four at the 12, Hilliard caught a Woodruff pass near the goal line and fell over it for the score. The conversion failed. The Warriors led 26-13 with 6:08 left in the third quarter.

The final Warrior score came with no time on the clock at the end of the third quarter. Set up by a Bishop interception of a Bulldog pass, the Warriors started at their own 48-yard line. Hilliard had a big catch on third-and-10 to keep the drive alive, taking the ball to the Bulldog 18.

On fourth-and-23, Woodruff found Benson to set up first-and-goal at the four. Bishop took the ball to the one and on second-and-goal, Woodruff ran the ball but fumbled at the goal line. Hilliard picked it up in the end zone and the Warriors took a big lead.

Nett added the PAT and the PBHS squad was up 33-13 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Warrior defense reigned in the second half, creating turnovers, giving the team plenty of time to chew up the clock on offense. Stops were made by Eldridge, Abramowich, Bishop, Mike Gfeller, Hamm, Brett Bass, and Woodruff.
