Marvin and Thelma Warkentine were the recipients of a national outstanding service award, after being nominated by the Kansas Wheat State Travel Club.
The couple was honored during the Grand National Rally in Shawnee, Okla. The award was presented by Janet and Harold Judy, national executive directors. The Warkentines were nominated by the Kansas club to receive the outstanding service award. They have been members of the travel club for 17 years.
In October, the Warkentines joined other members of the Kansas State Wheat travel club who met for several days at the Cowley County Fairgrounds in Winfield.
All club members own RV products made by a Millersburg, Ind., company.
One day the group visited the candy factor in Dexter where they saw licorice being made and were able to enjoy a sample.
Another day, the team had dinner in Winfield and saw a musical show. Chase Foster, a 14-year-old prodigy and his band, performed. Another band from Wichita also played.
A few days later, a caravan of 11 RV trailers went to Oklahoma. They stopped for lunch at Stillwater, Okla., then went on to Shawnee to attend the 28th Grand National Rally. They enjoyed catered meals and outstanding entertainment.
An another day, the Warkentines went on a bus tour to Oklahoma City. They toured the capital building and the governor's home, the Overholser mansion, and saw the museum and memorial for those who were killed in the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building, and other sights of the city.
The final evening, club members enjoyed a portrayal of Will Rogers, which included rope tricks. Many door prizes and awards were presented.
