Voters head to polls on Tuesday
Registration up, advanced voting slow in county
Marion County residents may not have registered to vote in droves during the last month but the election department within the county clerk's office has been busier than usual.
"Voter registration may have been a little bit heavier then we typically see during a spring election," said Election Officer Carol Maggard.
"I don't know if that's significant or it's because we have a few contested races throughout the county," she added.
Even though voter registration may have been heavier than usual before the deadline, advanced voting was crawling along as of Friday morning.
"We mailed out 90 advanced voting ballots, but have only had three walk-ins," Maggard said. "But it might be a little heavier Monday."
Those wishing to advance vote in the county clerk's office in the courthouse have until noon Monday. However, individuals wishing to receive an advanced voting ballot in the mail have until March 28 to request one at the clerk's office.
"There's also a special provision for sick or disabled voters," Maggard said, explaining individuals should contact her office for more information.
People who received an advance voting ballot in the mail must bring or mail it back to the county clerk's office.
"Sometimes people want to take it back to their polling site, but if the ballot was issued from our office we're the only ones who can count it," Maggard explained.
The general election is Tuesday. Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. A listing of poll sites is included in this newspaper.
