Vote Tuesday!
Voters to decide positions, marriage
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday to allow all Marion County voters the opportunity to vote on a change in the state's constitution regarding marriage.
The question relates to marriage being lawful between one man and one woman.
The question states: "(a) The marriage contract is to be considered in law as a civil contract. Marriage shall be constituted by one man and one woman only. All other marriages are declared to be contrary to the pubic policy of this state and are void.
"(b) No relationship other than a marriage shall be recognized by the state as entitling the parties to the rights or incidents of marriage."
Voters who agree with those statements should vote "yes." Voters who do not agree should vote "no."
Some voters also will decide on mayors, councilmen, city officials, and school board members.
Following are cities, candidates, and positions. ("I" indicates the candidate is the incumbent.)
Burns: Mayor Mary Glenn (I). Councilmen (five positions) Mark L. Brunhoeber (I), Fritzie Hatfield (I), Judith A. Steward, Mark L. Steward (I), and Elmer L. Welch. No candidate filed for treasurer.
USD 398: Position 4 Duke Eldridge (I), Position 5 Doe Ann Hague (I), and Position 6 Rhonda D. Loucks (I).
Florence: Mayor Susan E. Klassen. Councilman First Ward Randy V. Mills (I), Councilman Florence Second Ward Bryan L. Harper (I).
USD 408: Position 4 Keith Collett, Position 5 Jan Helmer, and Position 6 Lyle K. Leppke.
Peabody: Mayor Tom Schmidt. Councilmen (two positions) Jon Gard (I), Tim Peterson, and Edmond N. Slocombe.
USD 398: Position 4 Duke Eldridge (I), Position 5 Doe Ann Hague (I), and Position 6 Rhonda D. Loucks.
