Vote for your favorite banner

In the time-honored tradition of American democracy, you have an opportunity to voice your opinion on which banners will be chosen to grace our downtown light poles this coming holiday season.

As you'll recall, Main Street's Peabody Prairie Christmas committee initially selected five designs we could see fluttering in the crisp winter breezes downtown on Walnut Street. The Peabody Historical Society was asked to reduce the number of choices to three. They graciously — and quite handily — did so. Accompanying this article you will see a box containing the remaining three choices.

One is a series of six banners, each a red panel with a oval center containing a detailed black and white "pen and ink" style depiction of a traditional holiday scene. There would be NO TEXT on the banners.

The second option is a stylized white dove on a dark blue background with small snowflakes and the word "Peace" along the bottom edge.

The third option is white snowflakes and a holiday colored ribbon on a background color of medium blue with the word "Welcome" along the bottom edge.

All the banners are screen printed artwork on heavy, fade resistant cotton canvas and will be 48 inches in length and approximately 18-24 inches in width. The manufacturer has estimated the life span of the banners to be 10-15 years.

The banner committee members have all stood downtown with the pictures in hand, squinted, and imagined. Feel free to do it yourself. We each have our own favorites. We invite you to pick yours, mark your choice on the ballot, and then get that ballot to us — by mail, by handing it to one of the committee members, or by simply dropping the ballot through the bill-pay slot in the front wall of the city building.

Whether you're a quick voter or prefer to ponder a bit, please be aware that all ballots MUST be into the Main Street office by 5 p.m. Oct. 1.
