Virgil 'Smitty' Smith

Virgil L. "Smitty" Smith, 78, of El Dorado, died Oct. 30, 2007, at Harry Hynes Hospice, Wichita.

Born April 26, 1929, at Decatur, Ill., he was the son of Virgil and Edna (Morgan) Smith.

He served in the U.S. Navy.

On Aug. 11, 1953, he married Genevieve McKinzie. He attended barber college and barbered at Wichita and El Dorado.

In 1965, the family moved to Peabody and he operated a barber shop there until 1983, when the family moved back to El Dorado. He retired in 1992.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Survivors include his wife, Genevieve of El Dorado; three daughters, Debbie Belknap of Wichita, Kay Zang of El Dorado, and Dorothy Woods of San Antonio, Texas; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Nov. 1 at Carlson Funeral Home, El Dorado.

A memorial fund has been established with Heritage House, in care of Carlson Funeral Home, El Dorado.
