Virgie Rodgers
Services were held Dec. 31, 2002, for Virgie L. Rodgers at Florence Christian Church.
The Rev. Larry Timm officiated. Kim Kellum and Roger Whittaker were vocalists and Margene Dornbush presented a poem.
Casket bearers were Garry Skinner, Joe Svitak, Leroy Kellum, Rich Fine, Gene Schaffer, and Harold Dornbush.
Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established with the Florence ambulance service.
She was born March 7, 1910, in Florence, the daughter of Joe and Katie (Hiller) Maltbie. She died Dec. 27, 2002, at St. Luke Living Center in Marion.
Following graduation from high school she worked as a telephone operator.
On Nov. 21, 1931, she married Garry Skinner at Peabody. They lived on the farm for 20 years. She had five children. Her husband died Oct. 13, 1955, following a lengthy illness.
She relocated her family to Florence and she had as many jobs as she could find to support her children, often sewing for others.
On Dec. 3, 1973, she was married to Walter Rodgers, Newton, a family friend. They purchased a home which was well maintained and neat. And they traveled to visit friends and relatives around the nation.
He died Feb. 17, 2000, and moved to St. Luke Living Center where she was well cared for by an appreciative staff. Her daughter, Mary Lou Schaffer, visited her mother daily.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and two sisters.
Survivors include three sons, Dean Skinner, Joplin, Mo., Max Skinner, Marion, and John Skinner, Edmond, Okla.; two daughters, Mary Lou Schaffer, Florence, and Margene Dornbush, Marion; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
