Various and sundry things

I saw something pretty nice Monday afternoon. I was in my usual "press box" at the Florence city council meeting, taking copious notes on important city issues. The council had dispensed with its agenda items and was listening to reports from department heads. Police Chief Creighton Smith was first and he presented the mayor and council with a card of thanks he and his officers had received from people in the community. It was signed by more than 100 residents. There were special drawings from several children, who had added letters of their own.

The Florence police and members of the Marion County Sheriff's Department made a sizable drug bust in Florence recently. I am pretty certain it was one of those "all in the line of duty" things. However, the community sent its police department a thank-you note! Imagine that. What a nice thing for a town to do.

The new Marion County Economic Development web site is up and running. You should look it over. The address is www.marioncountyks.org. There is information about each community, an events calendar, and links to information about businesses, schools, recreation, and a ton of other stuff. It is worth a look. If you have suggestions or additional information, contact Joanna Brazil at the city building.

As long as I am doing my bit for public service announcements here, be sure to remember to change your clocks before you go to bed Saturday night. "Spring forward and fall back". . . I think . . . or is it "Spring back and fall forward". . . Nah, I'm pretty sure it's "Spring forward and fall back" . . . probably. Well, listen to a newscast Saturday night to be certain. The big boys always have it right. And while you are at it, you should change the batteries in your smoke alarms. You can still get free smoke alarm batteries at the Peabody City Building.

Fall foliage is gearing up for a spectacular showing. This weekend might be the perfect time for a drive in the country. Take an hour or two to get out and enjoy living in the Midwest. You won't have to worry about snipers or shark attacks. However, be sure to use caution if you head home at dusk. The deer in Kansas are on the move these days. I almost bagged my limit and then some the other night. Luckily, Bambi and his friends decided to fall back and not spring forward.
