Vandalism mars holiday for residents

As the sun came up Thursday, Peabody police officers were busy taking reports of criminal damage to property.

"The calls came in one right after another," said police chief Bruce Burke. "Thirteen complaints, all saying essentially the same thing, that someone damaged or destroyed Christmas ornaments and lawn displays."

All of the vandalism took place during the night Wednesday. Some decorations were moved to other parts of town and some were just smashed or destroyed and left for the homeowners to find in the morning.

"We are pursuing the person or people who did the damage," Burke said. "There is a cash reward being offered and that may get us some information."

Anyone who saw suspicious activity or has heard anyone discussing the destruction is encouraged to call the police at 983-2133. An alternative to calling in information is use the anonymous tip sheet on the city web site (www.peabodyks.com).

Burke also reports that a battery incident at the American Legion Dec. 9 still is under investigation.
