Following district tradition, members of USD 398 board of education met Oct. 8 at Burns for the October meeting.

The board made supplemental assignments, changed the date of the school play, and looked at the possibility of adding bowling to the district sports line-up.

Emergency substitute certificates for the 2007-08 school year were approved for Melissa Cutburth and Cynthia Harms. Gail Myers was offered the job of OASIS bus driver and Krishyn Caldwell the junior class sponsor position.

Board members also approved supplemental contracts to Joseph Credit and Cindy Sattler as freshman class sponsors, Brian Simmonds as assistant high school boys' basketball coach, and Brenda Riggs as director of the annual school play. Scheduling for the school play was discussed and the board agreed to move the production to April 2008.

Doug Cole resigned as bus driver effective Sept. 28.

The board also considered adding bowling to the high school's sports mix following a presentation by new Peabody Lanes owner Curtis McBride.

The board tabled a decision until November so that superintendent Rex Watson could obtain additional information on high school leagues, district costs, intramural programs, and student interest.

In other business, the board:

— approved the acceptance of a gift from the Ben Bishop Memorial fund for improvements to the football field public announcement system at Peabody City Park and a gift of $528 from First Baptist Church of Peabody to Peabody-Burns Elementary School homework club.

— heard a review by Doe Ann Hague of the timeline, process, and tools for evaluating the superintendent and a report by Rhonda Loucks about the revision of the board policy book.

— agreed to enter into the TEEN inter local agreement and accept the bylaws effective July1, 2008.

— learned from Watson the teacher in-service scheduled for Oct. 19 would cover state assessments, targeting indicators by building and grade levels, and individual learning plans for students.

— approved a three-year vocational agriculture plan of improvement.

— heard a report by Watson about the condition, age, and mileage of the district's fleet of buses, Suburbans, and vehicles and his recommendations for replacement.

— agreed on the superintendent's recommendation the Peabody-Burns Boosters should be re-named Junior-Senior High Booster Club. Bylaws also were accepted.

— accepted 403(b) tax sheltered annuity account plan and compliance services agreement through Security Benefit Life.
