USD 398 school board handles year-end business years ago

The usual year-end business was addressed by Peabody-Burns USD 398 school board members June 11 as well as some good-byes to longtime members and staff.
Outgoing superintendent Tom Alstrom and junior/senior high school principal Mary Brown thanked the board for their eight and seven years respectively at Peabody-Burns school district.
Outgoing board member Gilbert Loewen was presented with a service appreciation bell. Board members Peggy Phillips and Bill Spangler also are leaving the school board. They were presented with service appreciation bells at a district farewell dinner in May.
In other year-end business, the school board accepted the ratified negotiation agreement for the 2007-08 school year as presented. Also approved were contract offerings for certified staff and salaries for classified personnel.
Administrative salary decisions were made for elementary school principal Ken Parry and assistant high school principal Ray Savage.
For the 2007-08 school year Parry's 12-month contract was approved as discussed with 20 vacation days.
A 12-month contract and 20 vacation days also was approved as discussed for Savage along with the additional duties of building and grounds supervisor being added to his job description.
Salary information was not available from the district central office at press time.
In other business, the board:
— approved the hiring of Caleb Good and Derek Benson as summer maintenance and grounds keeping help and Jon Nesser as summer technology help.
— accepted at the end of the 2006-07 school year the resignations of Patrice Jones, Title I/Spanish teacher and Tina Partridge, bus driver.
— approved a contract offering to Rita Voth as Peabody-Burns Elementary School social worker for the 2007-08 school year.
— tabled until a future meeting, a decision on national trip criteria for student organizations and concerns of a Head Start parent about transportation during the 2006-07 school year.
— approved an additional expenditure of $1,979 for installation of a security system for the alternative education program location. In addition, $150 was approved to upgrade cameras and $200 approved for a battery backup system. Regier Construction's proposal for a security door system at the elementary school also was approved.
— agreed to accept for the 2007-08 school year: a network services agreement with Smoky Hill Education Service Center, a math strategies class (including a new instructor), the revised handbooks for both Peabody-Burns attendance centers, participation in the National Food Service Program Agreement (including state recommended pricing for adult meal rate), year-end transfers as recommended by Alstrom, and the agreement for services with Providence Working Canines.
