USD 398 board extends administrators contracts years ago

Following executive sessions to discuss personnel, the Peabody-Burns USD 398 board of education approved extending the contracts of three administrators.

Contracts for Mary Brown, junior/senior high school principal, Ray Savage, junior/senior high school assistant principal, and Ken Parry, elementary school principal all were extended through the 2006-2007 school year. Votes on each of the contracts were unanimous although board member Gilbert Loewen was absent.

On a motion by Peggy Phillips the board accepted with regret the resignation by Patty Savage as junior high volleyball and girls' basketball coach, effective Feb. 3.

Following a second motion by Phillips the board accepted the resignation of Brian Simmonds as junior high boys' basketball coach effective Feb. 13.

Emergency substitute licenses were approved unanimously for Leslie Allison, Sara Burch, Maria Claassen, Kenneth Franz, and Elizabeth Mille for the remainder of the school year.

In other business the board:

— heard a thank you note from the family of Stan Penner.

— heard that Peabody seventh grader Andrew Sheffler took first place in the Marion County Spelling Bee.

— designated Feb. 18 to 25 FFA week in Peabody by signing the National FFA Week Proclamation.

— went into executive session five times for the purpose of discussing personnel and once for the purpose of discussing acquisition of property. No action was taken on return to open meeting.

— heard that seventh and eighth grade quiz bowl teams scored second and fourth respectively at Remington.

— accepted the annual food service report as presented.

— approved the superintendent's recommendation for Peabody-Burns Elementary School staff development day for local K-6 math assessments April 27, early release Monday for a teacher in-service, and a half day off March 17 as a reward for reaching state Standard of Excellence on many tests.

— heard reports from Ken Parry about the elementary school site council, from Mary Brown and Ken Parry about at-risk students, and from Darren Schroeder regarding eligibility guidelines and a rewards program for students meeting state assessments. The board approved March 13 as a day off for seniors while other students complete state testing.

— reviewed the 2006 class trip with sponsors Allison Many and Wendy O'Neal and class president Jesse Riggs. Final approval for the trip was given.

— approved an overnight trip to allow one student, if selected, to attend Kansas Music Educators Association state honor band Thursday through Saturday at Wichita.

— accepted Kansas Association of School Boards board policy updates as presented.

— reviewed the district's complaint policy and placed an emphasis on adhering to policy when future complaints are submitted.
