Unexpected surprise
Something unexpected and terrific happened Jan. 31 at the Peabody-Burns High School basketball game. In the absence of the pep band, the National Anthem was performed by four PBHS students. The girls, Megan Cox, Christina Newfield, Stephanie Vetter, and Lindsay Wiebe, sang the song in beautiful harmony.
They did something that is scary and difficult. Performing in front of your peers and your hometown crowd can be nerve-wracking. I was so proud that students took the spotlight and tried something out of the ordinary.
I hope this inspires more students to step up and take the lead. How nice it would be to see an art show or a photo exhibition in the commons at a sporting event. Maybe we could have small ensembles to sing or play during halftime or between games.
The focus was shifted for a little while Jan. 31 and a repeat performance was enjoyed Friday. I was impressed.
I look forward to other students showing our community that, while sports are great, it's not all we have to be excited about.
Congratulations Megan, Christina, Stephanie, and Lindsay. You did great.
