U.S.-400 named Atomic Veterans Highway years ago
A bill to name U.S.-400 "Atomic Veteran's Highway," was passed by the Kansas House and Senate and will be signed into law by Governor Sebelius.
Next on tap is a fund-raising campaign to raise the $1,400 needed to purchase the designation signs and maintain them.
The bill honors Gary Thornton, Sr. of Leon and his fellow veterans who served their country in atomic test sites. They were exposed to harmful radiation in service to their country. Thornton is state commander of the Kansas Atomic Veterans.
The bill was sponsored by David Crum of Augusta and Ed Trimmer of southern Butler County.
