Two chances left to win block barbecue

By JOANNA BRAZIL

Now that the summer is winding down and with it, reunions, vacations, summer sports, and hopefully the heat, we are halfway through the neighborhood beautification contest. There are two more chances for your neighborhood to win a block party for keeping your block nice and tidy. Judging for the next contest is Sunday and Monday.

Winners enjoy a tasty barbecue dinner prepared by Peabody Economic Development Council. It's a great opportunity to get to know your neighbors better and dinner and the dishes are done for you!

Every block in Peabody is eligible to win. A block includes both sides of one street block. Whether your block is maintaining a look that already is well polished or you're improving the area in a significant way, your block is a great contestant to win the prize.

There are five anonymous judges for the contest. They remain anonymous even to each other. Each submits his/her top three picks, and after the votes are tallied, the winning block is announced in the Peabody Gazette-Bulletin.

Criteria to win the block party barbecue are:

1) Grass mowed, neat and clean; 2) Bushes and trees trimmed; 3) No appliances, junk, or debris in yards; 4) Clean curbs and gutters; 5) No nuisance conditions; and 6) or most improved in all of the above categories.

The final two contests and barbecues are as follows:

August — - Judging, Aug. 13-15 — - Winning barbecue — Aug. 26.

September — - Judging, Sept. 4-6 — - Winning barbecue — Sept. 15.

The dinner is sponsored by Peabody Hardware, Peabody State Bank, Peabody Market, City of Peabody, and Peabody Main Street Association.

Congratulations to the 500 block of Walnut Street and the 900 block of Locust Street for winning the first two contests. We hope your block is next! If you have any questions, contact Joanna Brazil at 983-2174 or email pmsa@peabodyks.com.
