Trojans fare well at Rim Rock

Even with teams from four states participating, Hillsboro High School cross country team had another good day Saturday, this time at the Rim Rock invitational in Lawrence.

Daniel Bookless once again led the boys' squad that finished fifth out of 20 teams in the boys' 5000-meter run. His time of 17 minutes, 59 seconds earned him a 10th-place finish.

"This competition was outstanding with teams from four states and almost 1,500 runners from 70 schools competing in three divisions," head coach Stuart Holmes said. "It was quite the spectacle."

Sean Leihy was next to finish for Hillsboro at 31st, with a time of 18:39. Four spots behind Leihy was Cody McMillen with a time of 18:52. Nate Holmes was the final Trojan to crack the top-50 with a time of 19:09, and a 46th-place finish. Isaac Leihy (77th), Robert Jost (88th), and Ric Johnson (93rd), rounded out the rest of the Trojan field.

The Trojan girls all ran in the two-mile junior varsity race because the varsity races were farther than the 3A schools usually run. The Trojan girls' team finished 11th out of 16 teams. Carrie Schroeder claimed fifth place with a time of 14 minutes flat. Jacque Fisher was second on the girls' team in 42nd place with a time of 14:57. Greta Kliewer (62nd), Elissa Richert (73rd), Courtney Fast (105th), and Megan McCarty (126th), were the final placers for the girls' team.

The Trojan boys' junior varsity team took 17th out of 27 teams. Thad Holmes led the squad with a 17th-place finish after running the race in 19:22.

Clint Schneider was the leader for the final Trojan race, a boys' C-team two-mile, with a 44th-place finish and a time of 13:14.

"Our athletes ran well with six setting new personal records, and seven establishing new season's best marks," Holmes said. "All in all it was a good day for our runners, and a great experience for our young people."
