Trojans crush MHS Warriors, alone at top of MCAA

Sports reporter

Heading into the match Oct. 4 against Marion, the Hillsboro High School Trojan volleyball team was tied for first at 5-1 with the Warriors.

Despite being even, the Trojans had the upper hand as momentum was strongly in their favor.

They had defeated Marion six straight times dating back to last season, despite Marion jumping ahead early in most of the matches.

"I think they always come out wanting to beat us," Arnold said. "I never know what to expect from them. Because of that, I feel like we are a little bit on edge."

After a Toni Gordon kill, Marion jumped out to a 13-10 lead in game one. A Trojan block followed by two straight Marion errors tied the match, and pushed the momentum back on Hillsboro's side.

The Trojans went on a 12-0 run to take a 22-13 lead and put the game out of reach. HHS took the game, 25-15.

Game two of the first match was similar with MHS jumping ahead 13-11 after an Erin Richmond kill.

A 12-4 Trojan run once again put the game out of reach, as Hillsboro went on to win 25-18.

Despite the great success against Marion, the Warriors have Arnold's respect.

"We take it seriously every time we play them," she said. "They have some talented girls, and are very good at serving."

After a break the Trojans came out and swept the Warriors once again, 25-15, 25-16.

The victories improve Hillsboro's record to 7-1 in the Mid-Central Activities Association, leaving them alone in first place with two matches against Halstead remaining.

The losses drop Marion two games back at 5-3.

Canton-Galva

The Trojans competed Oct. 1 in the Canton-Galva tournament.

Hillsboro went in as a three seed, and finished the day in third place after defeating Hesston.

HHS was a two seed after pool play, and dropped a semifinal match to Moundridge before the Hesston match.

The girls are now 18-5 overall.
