Trojan JV wins second straight with shoutout of Haven Wildcats

The Hillsboro Trojan junior varsity football team picked up its second straight win of the season Sept. 19, shutting out the visiting Haven Wildcats, 40-0.

"We played really well tonight," said Trojan coach Darrell Knoll. "The defense forced a couple of early turnovers and scored a touchdown to get us going. We were also sharp offensively."

Jacob Yoder carried the ball 11 times for a game-high 110 yards and two touchdowns as Hillsboro (2-1) stuck with its ground game to pound out 249 yards from 33 carries.

Daniel Jost carried seven times for 96 yards and also two touchdowns.

The Trojans jumped out to a 20-0 lead after the first quarter with Michael Scheele starting the rout with a 34-yard fumble recovery for the touchdown.

Ishmael Morris added six carries for 27 yards, breaking loose for a 25-yard score. Hillsboro stretched its lead 14-0 with Jost finding Dustin Strunk for the two-point conversion.

Yoder scored his first touchdown to close out the opening quarter then added his second, the final one of the game.

Jost's pair were good from 15- and 33-yards, respectively.

Defensively, paced by five total tackles, the trio of Nickolas Mueller, Brandon Brown, and Tyler Jones, held the Wildcats to 148 yards with 98 on the ground.

The secondary trio of Brett McIntosh, Mitchell Koop, and Grant Schneider gave the Wildcats' passing game fits, combining for four picks with McIntosh grabbing a pair.

"It was a great game to get everyone quality playing time," said Knoll. "We were really pleased with the effort."

The Trojans traveled Monday night to Lindsborg to take on the Smoky Valley Vikings. Results were not available at press time.

Up next for the Trojans is a Monday meeting in Wichita with the Collegiate Spartans at 6:30 p.m.
