Train sparks memories
To the Editor:
The Union Pacific Freedom Train that came through Peabody this past week brought back memories.
My folks, Don and Helen Hess, bought the property at 805 Plum in 1938, right across the street from the Rock Island double track railroad. I was in high school in the early 1940s, graduating in 1944. Of course, that was the beginning of World War II.
During those years the Rock Island had troop trains coming through town, not very fast. The boys would be hanging out the windows throwing their names and addresses and shouting to us young girls to write to them. It only cost 3c and if the servicemen wrote "FREE" on the corner of the envelope, they didn't need a stamp.
