Train-bicycle collision takes life of Peabody man
Lifelong Peabody resident Carl Mark Carson, 46, died early Friday from injuries he received Thursday in a train-bicycle collision at the Third Street intersection with a Union Pacific train.
At 11:25 a.m. Thursday, Carson was westbound on Third Street and failed to yield the right-of-way to the southbound freight train as it entered the intersection at Third Street. The intersection is not marked by lights, bells, or barricade arms.
"Mr. Carson was struck by the train," Peabody Police Chief Bruce Burke said. "There is no evidence that he tried to stop."
The accident was investigated by Peabody police officers and a Union Pacific Railroad law enforcement team from Salina. The train remained on the tracks until mid-afternoon.
"The train crew went back to Salina for a debriefing," Burke said. "A new crew was brought to Peabody and the train continued on its way."
Carson was air lifted about noon to Wesley Medical Center of Wichita by a LifeTeam helicopter. He reportedly underwent surgery and was treated for multiple broken bones and internal injuries.
Carson died of his injuries at 3 a.m. Friday morning.
According to Burke, the investigation into Carson's death is complete.
