Tour de Florence wet, but not a wash out
The fourth annual Tour de Florence committee hosted an abbreviated bike riding crowd May 6 as rained soaked much of Marion and Chase counties.
"We were excited to have 15 riders this year with the weather the way it was," said Jackie Sigwing, who with her husband Mike, organizes the Labor Day fund-raiser. "Some people showed up who had not registered in advance and some we planned on stayed home because of the storms.
"But those who rode enjoyed the challenge. It was sure a different ride than they expected!"
Sigwing said they shortened the ride from the planned 40-mile trip to a 24-mile trip over a bit easier terrain.
The group ended up at Grandview Park in Florence for a barbecue picnic provided by Labor Day volunteers. Riders also received an event T-shirt, especially appreciated this year because they were dry.
"The people who enjoy this type of activity really got a kick out of it even when the weather is a factor," said Sigwing. "Usually it is hot and dry. The rain will make this ride 'the one to talk about' for awhile.
"We are already planning for next year and will be ready to take it on, rain or shine!"
The Tour de Florence is usually held the first Sunday in May. For more information or to get on the mailing list for next year contact Mike or Jackie Sigwing at 620-878-4217.
