Tomahawks take it all!

The Peabody-Burns Junior High Tomahawks concluded the 2003-04 basketball season with a 14-0 record and the Heart of America Junior High league tournament championship.

The Tomahawks defeated Goessel in third round play, 57-42. In the championship game, the PBJH squad lassoed the Remington Colts 56-32.

The Tomahawks completed the season undefeated along with being crowned league champs and tournament champs.

In the Goessel contest, both teams were tough on defense early in the game. The Tomahawks put the first two points on the board, but the Bluebirds came back to score the next seven.

The PBJH squad then went on a six-point run to take back the lead, 8-7. The Tomahawks had a one-point edge at the end of one, 10-9.

The defensive pressure of the Tomahawks helped the offensive explosion in the second quarter. The Tomahawks took a 31-20 lead at the half.

The PBJH squad put up 21 in the period, led by Nathan Bishop with 11. Duane Unruh added six and Nick Abramowich put in four.

The Bluebirds outscored the Tomahawks 16-11 in the third to tighten the score. The lead was cut to eight at the end of three, 42-36. Bishop, Unruh, Abramowich, Trevor Hamm, and Ryan Wiebe put up scores for the Tomahawks.

The PBJH defense took control in the fourth and stopped the Bluebird attack. The Tomahawk offense scored 15 to clip the Bluebirds 57-42 and advance to the championship round of the Heart of America League tournament.

In the championship game against Remington, the PBJH team fell behind early, 4-0, but battled back to pull ahead of the Colts 12-6 at the end of the first quarter. Trevor Hamm paced the Tomahawks in the quarter with four points.

In the second, the Tomahawks built a nine-point lead. Free throws impacted both teams in the period. The PBJH squad took a 26-17 lead to the locker room at the break.

In the third quarter the Tomahawks kicked up the defense to take control of the game. Scoring also was good in the period, led by Nathan Bishop with seven. Duane Unruh, Nick Abramowich, Trevor Hamm, and Ryan Wiebe had two each. At the end of three, the gap was 16, 41-25.

The Tomahawks were able to coast through the fourth period with all players taking part in the 56-32 championship victory.

"This was a great season for all of our kids," stated head coach Brian Simmonds. "Our support from the community was terrific. The kids really deserve the recognition. They did great."
