Tomahawks slip past Celtics for another win
Staff writer
The Peabody-Burns Junior High Tomahawks played their toughest game yet this season, taking on Hutch Trinity Thursday on the road. The PBJH squad was able to hold on for a 24-20 win to bring their season record to 5-0. Another road game is up Thursday for the Tomahawks at Inman.
The PBJH squad began the contest on defense and forced the Celtics to turn the ball over on downs.
On offense the Tomahawks had some success moving the ball, but were forced to punt. A bad snap on the punt was covered by Trinity.
The Celtics took advantage by putting up the first score of the contest on the series. The PAT was no good, and the Tomahawks trailed 6-0.
The PBJH squad bounced back with a 50-yard run by Trevor Hamm to tie the score. Nathan Bishop hit Hamm on a pass for a two-point conversion. The Tomahawks went up by two, 8-6.
Both teams played good defense throughout the half. An interception by Duane Unruh gave the Tomahawks a late score for their next touchdown. Unruh ran 90 yards on the play with time running out in the half. Hamm ran the conversion and the Tomahawks took a 16-6 half-time lead.
After the half, Bishop took a Celtic squib kick 70 yards down field for an early second-half score. Bishop linked up with Unruh for two and the Tomahawks added to their lead 24-6.
A Celtic score on the next drive cut the lead 24-14.
The next big Tomahawk play came a series later with the defense holding the Trinity team to get the ball back inside the Tomahawk five-yard line.
The offense couldn't convert the possession, however, and were forced to punt.
The Celtics cut into the Tomahawk lead again with a score with just 59 seconds left in the game and the score was 24-20.
A crucial on-sides kick was recovered by the Celtics and advanced to the end zone. The score was negated however, and the ball came back to mid-field, the spot of the Celtic recovery.
The Tomahawk's defense made a huge stand to stop the surge of the Celtics to win the contest 24-20.

The next scoring drive for the Tomahawks started with another Unruh interception. Hamm scampered 40 yards for the score. The PAT was unsuccessful and the PBJH squad took a big lead 30-8.
