Tomahawks place third in post-season tournament

The Peabody-Burns Junior High varsity took third place last week in the Heart of America tournament. The Tomahawks played three tough games with two of the contests going into overtime. They finish the season with an impressive 13-2 record.
Seeded first in the tournament, the PBJH squad earned a bye for the first round of play.
Traveling to Moundridge, the Tomahawks met Sedgwick in the second round. The Sedgwick team jumped out to a 12-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Tomahawks picked up intensity in the second, but the Cardinals continued to play well, extending their lead to 24-15 at the half.
A defensive surge by the Tomahawks sparked the offense and the PBJH squad took the lead at the end of the third, 30-28.
The teams battled in the fourth with a final shot for the Tomahawks just missing, tying the score 38-38 and sending the game into overtime.
The Tomahawks scored five in the period and the defense held the Cardinals scoreless. The team advanced to the third round, winning a close one 43-38.

Thursday night action for the Tomahawks was a tough semifinal game against Remington.
The Colts took an early advantage and were up by four at the end of the first. Remington sparked in the second period and extended the lead to 24-7 at the half.
The Tomahawks came around in the second half, but couldn't close the gap.
Both teams played hard, but the Colts defeated the Tomahawks, 49-33.

The Tomahawks hit the road to Moundridge Saturday for consolation play against Inman. They arrived ready to play, but were matched by a good Inman team.
The Braves lead at the end of the first quarter 11-10. Both teams continued to play well and the Tomahawks trailed by four at the half, 21-25. Inman kept the Tomahawks away from the boards during the first half.
The battle heated up in the second half with the Tomahawks pulling even in the third quarter, but falling behind again in the fourth. A last second shot hung on the rim, then fell in after the horn to tie the game 48-48, sending the game into overtime.
The Tomahawks jumped out to a lead early in the extra period and held off the Braves, hitting eight of 11 from the free-throw line. The Tomahawks defeated the Braves 60-56 in overtime and claimed third place in the tournament.
"This was a great season and a great bunch of kids to work with," said Coach Simmonds. "The kids never gave up and found ways to win close ball games. I wish them luck in the future."
