Tomahawks place third

The Peabody-Burns Tomahawks ended their basketball season last week with a third place finish in the Heart of America league tournament. The Tomahawks earned a first round bye, being seeded second in the tourney. The squad defeated Hutch Trinity 38-37, lost to Remington 59-53, and came back to defeat Pretty Prairie 42-32.

Both teams struggled early in the Hutch Trinity game. Peabody-Burns was down 11-8 at the end of the first quarter.

Trinity and the Tomahawks traded baskets throughout the second period. Trinity led by one at the half, 22-21.

Trinity still managed a slight lead in the third quarter, 28-27. The game remained tight, but Trinity pulled away late in the game.

The Tomahawks battled back, down six, to tie the game. Trinity missed a late free throw opportunity, but fouled the Tomahawks on the rebound. With one second on the clock, Trevor Hamm hit one of two free throws to win the game, 38-37.

Remington overpowers Tomahawks

The PBJH Tomahawks met the Remington Colts in the next round of play. The Tomahawks were behind by three at the end of the first period, 11-8.

Big inside play from the Colts gave them a 24-16 half time lead.

Defensively the Tomahawks kicked up the pressure in the second half, but the Tomahawks still trailed, 40-31, at the end of the third.

The Tomahawks made up some ground, but could only come as close as two. Remington shot well from the free throw line and defeated the Tomahawks, 59-53.

Final round winner

The final round of tournament play took place Saturday at Burrton.

The Tomahawks claimed third place with a victory over Pretty Prairie.

The Tomahawks came out slow, scoring only four points in the first quarter. Both teams improved play in the second quarter, but were hampered with fouls. The Tomahawks took a one point lead to the locker room at the half, 17-16.

The Tomahawks improved defensively in the third and rebounded well. The PBJH squad out-shot the Pretty Prairie five and led 27-18 at the end of the third quarter.

They stayed in control in the fourth, although Pretty Prairie pulled close several times. The Tomahawks shot 21 of 34 from the free throw line and defeated Pretty Prairie, 42-32.

The team finished 12-3 overall on the season.
