Tomahawks are league champions

Staff writer

The Peabody-Burns Tomahawks finished their regular season play Feb. 4, hosting the Redskins from Little River.

The boys' varsity claimed victory number 11 on the season and also the league championship. They finished the year with only one loss. The junior varsity boys also put one in the win column. The girls' varsity were defeated, but the reserves won in a close contest.

The Tomahawks now ready themselves for post-season tournament play.

The varsity boys came out a little sluggish, but soon came alive behind a strong defensive surge.

At the end of the first, the Tomahawks lead by 7, 14-7. Offense ignited from the field and the Tomahawks took a 34-16 lead to the locker room.

Good team play throughout the game gave the Tomahawks an impressive win. Hustle and unselfishness with the ball helped the Tomahawks to a 70-36 victory over the Redskins.

"We had a great season with several tough, tight games," stated coach Brian Simmonds. "Those kinds of games make for a memorable season. It was great to see the kids pull together and play as a team. We had lots of players contribute all season long and that makes for a very special season."

A slow start for the PBJH junior varsity boys let the Redskins reserves jump out to a 12-4 lead. The Tomahawks picked up the defense in the second, but cold shooting kept the gap at 13-7 at the half.

The Tomahawks got it going in the third and tied the game 19-19. The PBJH squad pulled ahead to stay in the fourth and defeated the Redskins 29-23.
