Thomas will portray Brinkley at historical society meetin

Marion County Historical Society will meet for a dinner and meeting Tuesday at The Hub, 120 N. Walnut, Peabody.

Dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by the program at 7 p.m.

Don Thomas of Wichita will portray Dr. John Brinkley. He will bring back the days of "Goat Gland Dr. Brinkley."

There are several people in the Peabody community who recall connections between Dr. John Brinkley and Orlando Jolliffe.

Joan Berns remembers hearing about Jolliffe and Brinkey when she was in high school. Orlene Scrivner, one of Peabody's best historians, recalls hearing from Dr. Jessen (who had his office in the bank building) the story that Jolliffe mailed out so many pieces of mail from the top floor of the bank for Dr. Brinkley that Peabody became a second class post office!

Postal records for this era were destroyed about 20 years ago in the revamping of the postal system.

Laura Slocombe said, "Oh yes, Abilene radio used to say 'the goat gland station in the heart of the nation!'"

Thomas has collected stories and trivia about one of the slickest "snake oil doctors" of all time and will share his knowledge at the historical society meeting.

Anyone living in Marion County is automatically a member of the society and is welcome to attend the dinner and meeting.

The group meets quarterly at various locations in the county to learn more area history.

Tickets for the dinner are available from Ross Baker, 620-983-2377, Marilyn Jones, 620-983-2815, or Mary Olson, 620-382-3843, or may be purchased at Mayesville Mercantile, Peabody.

Reservations are due Friday.
