Thieves have busy summer so far

Peabody police are investigating what appears to have been a busy night for thieves in Peabody. Burglaries of six motor vehicles and the theft of a cargo trailer containing landscaping equipment all occurred June 10.

The cargo trailer of equipment belonged to former Peabody-Burns High School social science teacher and coach Chris Young. Young and his family had left Peabody for a vacation in Arizona. He employs a group of high school students to help with his mowing and landscaping business and the students discovered the theft June 11.

"We don't have a complete list of what was in the trailer," said Peabody Police Chief Bruce Burke. "Mr. Young and his family are still out of town and we won't get a listing until he gets home."

A preliminary inventory of his equipment shows the theft of a push lawnmower, miscellaneous tools, a chain saw, and a weed eater.

The six additional burglaries took place the same night according to Burke. Items were taken from cars parked at various residences in the city.

The incidents are still under investigation.

Burke reports that on Friday he made a presentation to Peabody-Burns students enrolled in driver's education.

Peabody police officers arrested two individuals at 2:30 p.m. Saturday for criminal trespass when they were caught riding a Union Pacific train through Peabody. According to Peabody Police Chief Bruce Burke, they were turned over to Union Pacific security officers.

On Sunday police were called to a disturbance where they arrested an adult female for domestic battery. She was transported to Marion County Jail. Charges are pending in municipal court.

A juvenile was arrested early Monday morning walking the streets of Peabody. He was in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Charges are pending.
