The pride of Peabody
To the Editor:
Wow! What a week we had. Winter finally came in with a very rude arrival.
Most of us probably didn't really believe the forecast we have been hearing for a few days, but the weather man (pick your favorite one) was right.
Of course the freezing rain starts right after the school day begins. The kids are delighted to be going home unaware what the next few days will bring to their "normal" way of life.
As my kids and I stood on our porch Tuesday afternoon we listened to the endless cracking and snapping of tree limbs. It is a sound we won't forget for a long time. All around us we see only the beginning of the destruction from the ice. We then lost power, really not thinking it would be for long. Wrong! As the day darkened and temperatures dropped, candles came out, layers of clothing came on, and the milk was set outside.
We did survive the first night and the second. No one in our family starved or froze to death. Thursday night we got our electric back on and we all got our much-needed showers.
As a community we all went through similar situations. The neat part was we were in this together, pulling together to help others. Many made new friends at the senior center. It was a weather situation that hopefully won't happen again for a very long time, but it has taught a very good lesson on how, as a community, we can pull together.
As a community simply saying "thank you" does not even begin to state how very thankful we are to all the firemen, police, EMS, city, county, businesses, volunteers, and electrical workers from far and near who took care of us.
Thank you for leaving your families to help others. Your professionalism and dedication to what you do to the fullest protects and saves lives.
God bless you and thank you.
