Team chosen to select district awards winners
As the school year winds down, Peabody-Burns board of education heard at the March 10 meeting, the recommended number and amounts of the awards to be presented at graduation.
The selection committee, which chooses students to receive awards, is comprised of the superintendent and two school board members.
Board members approved the recommended awards and selected Peggy Phillips and Duke Eldridge to serve on the committee with Superintendent Tom Alstrom.
Early retirement of long-time district elementary school teacher Karen Saner was accepted by the board with regret. Her application for early retirement was approved, beginning with the 2003-04 school year.
An executive session to discuss personnel was held at the end of the board meeting with the clerk and superintendent remaining in the session. No action was taken when the board returned to open meeting.
The board also:
— approved early release on April 1, 2003, for a state department in-service update on QPA and "No Child Left Behind."
— agreed to charge non-profit groups a rate of $1 per mile for the use of district buses. The rec commission is not included in the application of fees.
— scheduled a special meeting to discuss budget cuts for 6 p.m. March 28 and a board retreat for 7 a.m. April 5.
— approved the request from the Business Professionals of America organization to attend a national convention in Dallas.
— tabled until the next meeting a vote on a proposal by Duke Eldridge to change board of education meeting nights to Wednesday instead of Monday.
