Tea, fashion show is well attended
St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Peabody was the setting Saturday for a Victorian tea and Civil War fashion show. Tea and refreshments were served to 82 guests by costumed servers.
The event, presented by the Victorian Revival Society, was attended by women from many parts of the state as well as an out-of-state guest from Oklahoma.
The program provided some general information on the Victorian period, the custom of "taking tea," and the Victorian language of flowers.
A concert of Civil War-era music was provided by Jon and Betsey Goering, two-thirds of the musical group, "The Freestaters." Jon played guitar and banjo and Betsey played the violin.
The Civil War fashion show featured 15 models wearing day dresses or ball gowns with the particular features of each being discussed. The show concluded with the entrance of a bride, Betsey Goering, who wore her own gown from her recent Civil War-period wedding.
Doug McGovern, a photographer who specializes in period-style stereoscopic slides, was in attendance and took numerous photos of the event.
The event was the first of several planned by the Victorian Revival Society. Proceeds from the day will be donated to help with Main Street's Senior Center facade improvement.
