Sunflower Road project to begin Oct. 15 years ago

Marion County will purchase hot mix from Shilling Construction, the contractor hired to reconstruct Sunflower Road. County workers then will patch ahead of the asphalt crew.
Road and bridge supervisors told Marion County Commission Friday that construction will begin Oct. 15.
In other business:
— The commission approved salaries for new public works director Martin Rhodes at $2,833 per month and $34,000 per year, and road foreman John Summerville at $2,500 per month and $30,000 per year.
— Sales tax collected and distributed in July was $45,782, slightly less than previous years.
— The installation of a new monitoring water well at the former landfill site has been completed.
The third round of water sampling also has been completed, reported assistant county clerk Tina Spencer. She added that a survey needed to be completed. The county's consultant, Jack Chappelle, recommended ESC Surveying at a price of $850. The commission approved the recommendation.
— Area fuel bids were approved with two going to Cooperative Grain and Supply of Hillsboro and two to Cardie Oil Company of Tampa.
The co-op presented bids of $2.462 per gallon for 800 gallons for a total of $1,969, and $2.4455 for 2,150 gallons of fuel for a total of $5,278 and a grand total of $7,258. Cardie's presented bids of $2.466 per gallon for a total of 3,600 gallons of fuel for a total of $8,878.
— The commission approved a budgeted transfer of $400,000 from the road and bridge special machinery fund to the equipment fund.
— Road and bridge supervisors Bev Cooper, Tom Holub, Dennis Maggard, and Gary Williams requested and received a 15-minute executive session with the commission to discuss personnel. The meeting reconvened with no decisions.
— County public health administrator Diedre Serene and county sanitarian and health officer Bobbi Strait requested and received a 10-minute executive session with the commission to discuss personnel. The meeting reconvened with no decisions.
— Spencer requested and received a five-minute executive session to discuss personnel.
When the meeting reconvened, the commission approved an extension of vacation time for communications and emergency management director Michele Abbott-Becker. Abbott-Becker was given until the end of the year to use her remaining vacation time.
The next commission meeting is at 9 a.m. Monday at the courthouse.
